Electronic transport and navigation systems

Transport has always been one of the driving forces behind the technological process

The digitalisation of the transport sector is no exception, and the trend for this has been particularly pronounced since 2018-2020. We will tell you more about the current situation in this segment, trends and prospects.

market for navigation and other electronic systems for transport

Existing situation

The global market for navigation and other electronic systems for transport is expected to reach $44.4 billion in 2024, according to Mordor Intelligence. At a compound annual growth rate of 9.9%, this market is expected to grow to $71 billion by 2029.

The demand for such technological solutions is caused not only by the progress and equipping of modern transport with various gadgets, but also by the use of such devices to improve the quality of traffic control, optimise traffic flows and logistics. Moreover, we are talking about the creation of full-fledged ecosystems that allow not only monitoring, but also justifying certain decisions.

The leading positions in the global market of electronic and navigation systems for transport are occupied by the USA and China. The largest manufacturers are located there: Garmin, Honeywell International Inc., Collins Aerospace Inc Raytheon Company Ltd. This is explained both by the high demand for such solutions due to the significant volume of the transport market and the developed engineering school and production base.

At the same time, Russian companies are currently making significant progress in the development and implementation of electronic and navigation systems. In 2023, according to Deputy Prime Minister Dmitry Chernyshenko, 19 transport digitalisation projects were implemented by four industrial competence centres in the Russian Federation. And this applies to both public transport and freight transport, as well as booking systems. For example, the volume of the Russian market for digital logistics solutions doubled in 2023, reaching RUB 12.7 billion. In addition, in 2024, more than RUB 3.15 billion was allocated for the introduction of intelligent transport systems in the constituent entities of the Russian Federation. In total, such projects are being implemented in 62 agglomerations located in 56 regions of the Russian Federation. They include the creation and further development of integration platforms for managing the city transport system based on domestic hardware and software.

It is worth mentioning separately the development of unmanned aerial vehicles. And here Russia is among the leaders. For example, Yandex and Sber have presented their versions of unmanned cars. In turn, the KamAZ company is actively developing unmanned trucks, which are already travelling along the M11 motorway.

Key trends and prospects for the digitalisation of transport

It is worth noting the following promising areas for the development of digitalisation in the transport sector. The first is the creation of "smart" complexes for managing the city's transport complex, which include navigation systems for urban public transport (thanks to which it is possible to track the number of rolling stock on routes and, if necessary, remove additional rolling stock), a traffic management system, and multi-level protection from external interference.

The second direction is the development of unmanned transport. Such solutions are also relevant for use not only in cars (including taxis and freight transport), but also in urban public transport. Moreover, in Moscow and St. Petersburg, in addition to unmanned cars, unmanned trams and trains (on the MCC) are already being tested.

The further development of various driver assistants in modern transport should be recognised as a separate area. These include driver assistance systems, remote control systems and, of course, IoT solutions.

The fourth promising area for the introduction of digital and navigation solutions is various carsharing products (carsharing and kicksharing). In this case, such technologies will make it possible to control the existing fleet of vehicles and, if necessary, take measures to respond to various violations.

Participation in ExpoCifra is a chance for manufacturers to make a name for themselves

Entering the growing market of digital and navigation solutions for transport is interesting for both new entrants and experienced players ready to enter new segments. But regardless of the background, the key business task is to establish reliable partnerships. Participation in the new ExpoCifra exhibition, which brings together both manufacturers of digital and navigation solutions for transport and their consumers, will help to solve this problem.

The section of ExpoCifra dedicated to electronic transport and navigation systems will be one of the key and promising sections of the exhibition. It will present solutions for electric transport and special vehicles, unmanned transport and telematics, solutions for smart roads infrastructure, transport monitoring systems, and navigation equipment. It is worth noting that within the ExpoElectronica exhibition, which for the first time included the IT and digital solutions section, electronic transport and navigation systems were of interest to 1,043 surveyed professionals who visited the exposition.

If your company manufactures or supplies electronic transport and navigation systems, participation in the International Exhibition of Information Technologies and Solutions for Digital Transformation ExpoCifra (15-17 April 2025, Moscow, Crocus Expo IEC) will allow you to demonstrate solutions to the target audience and find new partners.
